How to keep your home safe during winter vacations

The holiday season is here, and with Christmas only a couple of days away, many will be traveling across the country to spend time with family and friends. When leaving your home unattended for more than a couple of days, it’s important that you are planning appropriately. We need to make sure that your home is protected and safe for when you return!

At ServiceOne, we understand how home security and safety is a top priority for homeowners. That is why we offer many different services to help keep your home safe, secure and protected for anything that might happen. Below, we share some tips on what you can do to keep your home safe while travelling this holiday season.

Shut the water off

Although it’s not something anyone ever really thinks about, when leaving for your vacation, you should try to remember to shut off your home’s water supply. In the event of a burst pipe or out of the blue issues, shutting your home’s water off will prevent any water damage from occurring while you are away.

Turn your thermostat down

Since no one will be home while you are away, it’s safe to turn down the thermostat. Turning the temperature down will save you money on your energy bill. However, you will not want to turn the heating of your home completely off while you are away. Turning the heat too low will freeze up your home’s pipes and cause a bigger problem.

If you have a smart thermostat that allows you to change your home’s temperature remotely, that is even better! If you were to forget to turn your heat down, you could always do it on the road, as well as turn your heat back up upon arriving back home!

Schedule light

One great tip to vacation proof your home is by scheduling light. Keep intruders from noticing you are away from home by making it look like your home is occupied. Leaving a light on in one room like the kitchen or dining room is great especially if you normally leave it on. Consider investing in a timed lamp that will go on during a specific time of the day.

Have someone check on the home

If you have established a great relationship with your neighbors, you will want to ask them to check on your home while you are away. If you don’t trust them that much, get a friend or relative to check up on your home. It will make it look like there are people at home. If you leave during the winter, have someone shovel the snow to show that the house is occupied.

Stop your mail

If you are going to be away for more than a week or up to a month, have the post office hold your mail. You can go and pick your mail when you come back. Hold off on online shopping so you don’t have to worry about packages getting stolen or be an obvious clue that you are not home.

Don’t share until you get home

We live in a society where we want to share every moment of your lives. Resist the urge of oversharing on social media until you get home. Sharing that you are not home is like broadcasting to the whole world and especially to burglars. So save those cute beach pictures until you get home.

Get home security

What better way to prepare your home and protect it when you are away than with a home security system. The best part is you can control and monitor it all from your cell phone. You can get options that control your thermostat as well.
