How to keep your home safe during vacations

‘Tis the season for vacationing. Whether you are visiting relatives that live across the states during the holidays or getting away from the snow, people are vacationing. AAA states that 53.4 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home this Thanksgiving. Leaving away from home for a week or two comes with a lot of planning, especially if you own a house. You need to ensure your home will be protected and safe when you get back. That is why we want to share with you some tips to vacation proof your home during your holiday vacations.

Shut the water off

Last thing on your mind while packing for your winter getaway is turning off all the water in your home. However, this should be on top of your list before you step out the door. Shutting your home’s water off will prevent any water damage from occurring while you are away.

Thermostat down

Since no one will be home while you are away, it’s safe to turn down the thermostat. Turning the temperature down will save you money on your energy bill. You should want to either turn your thermostat down or up according to the temperature. If you are leaving for vacation during the summer, you will want to turn it up. If you are leaving during the winter time, you want to turn it down.  However, you will not want turn the heating of your home completely off while you are away. Turning the heat too low will freeze up your home’s pipes and cause a bigger problem.

Schedule light.

One great tip to vacation proof your home is by scheduling light. Keep intruders from noticing you are away from home by making it look like your home is occupied. Leaving a light on in one room like the kitchen or dining room is great especially if you normally leave it on. Consider investing on a timed lamp that will go on during a specific time of the day.

Have someone check on the home.

If you have established a great relationship with your neighbors, you will want to ask them to check on your home while you are away. If you don’t trust them that much, get a friend or relative to check up on your home. It will make it look like there are people at home. If you leave during the winter, have someone shovel the snow to show that the house is occupied.

Stop your mail.

If you are going to be away for more than a week or up to a month, have the post office hold your mail. You can go and pick your mail when you come back. Hold off on online shopping so you don’t have to worry about packages getting stolen or be an obvious clue that you are not home.

Don’t share until you get home.

We live in a society where we want to share every moment of your lives. Resist the urge of oversharing on social media until you get home. Sharing that you are not home is like broadcasting to the whole world and especially to burglars. So save those cute beach pictures until you get home.
